What is the importance of Claire's vacation home in the novel, Everything We Left Behind?

It is in Claire’s vacation home in Puerto Escondido that she set up a Skype call with Phil so that she could try to provoke Carlos out of his fugue state. She stayed in this house next-door to Carlos and his boys so that she would have a chance to get to know her grandchildren. She never told Carlos that she was his biological mother.
