Why doesn't Nadia know her father in the novel, Everything Inside?

In Section Two, we learn that Nadia's mother and father moved from Haiti to Ameria. When the war ended, Nadia's mother told her that her father went back to Haiti and abandoned them when Nadia's mother was pregnant with her. Nadia later learns that her father never knew about her at all.
