Who is Thomas

Thomas is a character in the story “The Gift.” He is a Haitian man who sometimes travels to Miami for business. He used to have a sexual relationship with Anika, a Haitian woman living in Miami. However, after his wife and child died in the 2010 earthquake, he felt immense guilt and ended his relationship with Anika. His grief for his wife and child caused him to have an emotional breakdown, and he was a patient in a psychiatric hospital for a period of time. When he meets with Anika again, he still does not wish to resume his relationship with her.
