Who is mother?

The narrator’s mother in the story “In the Old Days” is a Haitian immigrant. After she and her husband immigrated to New York City, her husband moved back to Haiti. She stayed in New York and did not tell him that she was pregnant. They divorced, and she kept the child a secret so that she would never have to share custody.
