What is Portrait?

In “The Gift,” the portrait symbolizes the failure to emotionally connect. The titular gift is an abstract portrait painted by Anika. It depicts Thomas’ deceased wife and child as birds. Thomas is unsettled by the gift, and he has no interest in resuming his romantic relationship with Anika. Thus, Anika has seemingly failed to reestablish an emotional connection with Thomas.
