Narrator (“The Port-au-Prince Marriage Special”)

The narrator of “The Port-au-Prince Marriage Special” is a Haitian woman. She owns and operates a small hotel in the city of Port-au-Prince. They employ a young woman named Mélisande to help raise their son, Wesley. After Mélisande is diagnosed with AIDS, the narrator removes Wesley from Mélisande’s care, as she is afraid of Wesley somehow contracting the disease. The narrator decides to pay for Mélisande’s medical treatment for as long as possible.
