Importance of Jeanne

Jeanne is a character in the story “Sunrise, Sunset.” She lives in Miami and is the daughter of Haitian immigrants. Jeanne is in her early 30s. She is married and has recently given birth for the first time. Her son’s name is Jude. Jeanne appears to suffer from postpartum depression, and she refuses to spend any time with her son. When Jeanne’s mother—who is in the early stages of dementia—almost endangers Jude, Jeanne feels fear and then feels relief once Jude is safe. Jeanne thereby realizes that she loves Jude and is ready to be a mother.
