Why does Madeline's mother claim she has decided to re-hire Carla in “Pretending”?

Madeline's mother re-hires Carla largely because she hopes that Carla will bring Madeline out of her depression. She claims however that she may not trust Carla, but she trusts Madeline because she has learned her lesson.
