What is the significance of the chapters that are titled "Madeline's Dictionary"?

In these chapters, Madeline describes words that relate to her emotions and/or circumstances. For instance, in the chapter "Madeline's Dictionary" following her sexual experience with Olly, she defines the word infinite as "The state of not knowing where one body ends and another begins" (226).
