What does Button represent?

The button is a symbol of selfishness in “Riding the Bullet.” When George pushes Alan to decide if he wants George to take him or his mother in death, Alan chooses his mother as the one who should die. Because Jean was a single mother and gave Alan so much when he was a child, Alan feels that his decision was a selfish one.
