What do Cigarettes represent?

The cigarette is a symbol of superstition in “Room 1408.” Even though Mike no longer smokes, he still carries a cigarette tucked behind his ear. He shares with Olin this is a sort of superstitious behavior, somewhat like wearing a lucky shirt.
