The novel, Everyman, follows a nameless male protagonist through his life and death in a nonlinear narrative. Along the way, the protagonist experiences a lifelong struggle with accepting the idea of mortality. He also has difficulty maintaining consistent, loving relationships with the people in his life. After three failed marriages, a successful career in advertising, and subsequent retirement to the Jersey Shore, he attempts to make sense of life and death. Important themes in the novel include mortality, identity, relationships, family, and loss.
