Oppression would be an apt description.... To the Ladies addresses the theme of marriage, which in the text, Lady Chudleigh does not give high marks to. The poet notes that in marriage, "wife and servant are the same." She also alludes to "tying the knot", as a sentence of death.... and the ceremonial words, ..."which nothing, nothing can divide," as a sentence.... a curse.
