How does Achilles ingratiate himself into the group as the leader?

Achilles treats the younger children as if they were his children and becomes known as the crew's Papa. He takes bites out of the children's bread, but not from Poke's. This is an intentional slight. Achilles manipulates the children away from Poke, their former leader.
