Describe symbolism in Empire Falls by Richard Russo

One main symbol in the novel, Empire Falls, is the church steeple. After volunteering to paint his church, Miles suddenly finds himself too afraid to complete the task.... afraid of heights. This fear symbolizes the degree to which he's been beaten down emotionally, an well as his fear of trying to pull himself up from his emotional fall.
