Mary Stuart. more commonly referred to as Mary Queen of Scots, was the daughter of Margaret, Henry VIII's older sister, and King James IV of Scotland. Mary became a rival in Elizabeth's bid to be named the presumptive heir.

Mary had a son James, by Lord Darnley. When Darnley was murdered, she married Bothwell. Mary and Bothwell were then captured, after which, Mary was incarcerated and forced to abdicate the throne. Bothwell, however, escaped, and the couple never saw each other again. After many years, Mary was executed in England for a plot against the life of Elizabeth. Bothwell died in Denmark in 1578.
