To whom did the preacher try to sell Elijah? For what purpose?

The preacher tried to sell Elijah and himself to the carnival, wishing to become a con man and to travel with the carnival. However, the owner of the carnival would not come to an agreement with the preacher. It is unclear at this point why the preacher wanted to take Elijah with him into the carnival.
