Who is Paul Warren from Election: A Novel and what is their importance?

Paul Warren, Election, is running for Student Government President. He is smart (National Merit semifinalist), handsome, and plays on the football team. Paul has a favorite teacher, Mr. M., who encourages him to run for the office. Paul likes Mr. M's classes because they have given him a wider perspective on how big the world is and how many opportunities there are. Paul's world in the here and now is falling apart because his father is having an affair and his parents are separating.

Soon after he begins his campaign, Lisa, Paul's Lesbian sister's girlfriend, offers to help him run the campaign. They begin to date (leaving Tammy the sister wondering what happened). As retribution, Tammy (Paul's sister) decides to run against him. In the end it looks as if Paul has won the election, but then there is a recount and he isn't the winner.
