Who is Jack Dexter from Election: A Novel and what is their importance?

Jack Dexter is a former English teacher. He had an affair with then-fifteen year old student, Tracy Flick. Tracy ended their relationship after her mother found out, and Jack responded by smashing the windshield on his car and divorcing his eight-month pregnant wife, Sherry. Jack then goes to live at home and works at his father's hardware shop.
