In Chapter Three, why do the students in Eleanor's English class laugh at her?

In Chapter Three, Eleanor is called upon to read aloud a poem. The poem's opening line, however, is “I had been hungry all the years.” Eleanor is a large girl and there have already been jokes about her weight.
