With what illness is Cece diagnosed and what does the doctor say about it?

The results of the spinal tap show that Cece has meningitis and the doctor tells Cece's mother that her brain might swell as a result. It is at this point that the reader learns that Cece is only four years old since her mother exclaims that very fact in response to the doctor's diagnosis.
