What is the significance of New York City in the novel, Eileen?

New York City is a fixation in Eileen's head, as she dreams of eventually running away there to start a new life. Older Eileen mentions that when she eventually got there, she was greeted by seediness and some of her hopes in life were dashed. It is also where Eileen first gets married and changes her name.
