Educating Esme: Diary of a Teacher's First Year
At the beginning of Part I, what does fifth-grader Melanie warn incoming students about the fifth grade?

Melanie warns that those thinking fifth grade will be fun are mistaken. You have to "know every thing," including division, multiplication tables, and the Dewey decimal system. There is a lot of reading required. You cannot say "shut up," you must "follow the golden rule," and you cannot talk back to the teacher.
