In Eclipse, Rosalie shares her story with Bella in an attempt to explain why she has been distant toward her. She does not believe that Bella should throw away her humanity so lightly. Rosalie was alive during the 1930's and engaged to a wealthy man. While she is out walking one night she comes across her fiance with his friends. They are all drunk. They beat her, rape her, and leave her for dead. Carlisle comes across her and recognizes her from when he treated her broken leg as a young girl. Upset to see such beauty horrificially destroyed, he makes her a vampire. Rosalie says that if she had, had a choice that she would have prefered to have been left to die. She will never have children, never grow old, and watch everyone she ever loved die.
