Rothgar is the aging king of Venden. According to Herger, he is a prideful man, whose pride was responsible for bringing the wrath of the wendol upon him. Rothgar's kingdom is growing old and lacks young able-bodied warriors to confront the nightly terrors. Rothgar, himself, is a broken man. Incapable of controlling his own sons, his youngest, Wulfgar, is sent to fetch Buliwyf. Wulfgar then stays away for his own safety. Wiglif, another of Rothgar's sons, has killed three of his brothers in his desire to obtain the throne. Thus, Rothgar faces two evils at home and is unable to battle either one.
