Buliwyf is a capable warrior and the novel's hero. When Wyglif falls ill and dies, Buliwyf steps forward and assumes the leadership role for Wyglif's people. As their leader, he then journeys to Rothgar's hall to battle the wendol.

When Buliwyf discovers his homeland has been destroyed, he dutifully continues on his intended mission. He is an exemplary Northman, exalting in the thrill of battle and without fear of death. He is, however, concerned for the welfare of his companions and is pained by the loss of his men in battle. Even in his death, Buliwyf's first concern is for his warriors. He appears beside them as the figure of Odin and rallies his men to the final battle.
