Many of Hurston's African American writing peers felt the novel painted black Americans as stereotypes. Authors like Richard Wright and Ralph Ellison felt the novel was "backwards" and "Uncle-Tommish". They felt he used Ebonics to perpetuate cultural stereotypes.
