The novel's conflict is centered around the decision made by two teenagers, who remove a STOP sign as part of a driver's education "class project," which results in the death of a young mother at that intersection. The novel increases in emotional intensity as the teens reach the decision to admit and accept responsibility for their action, and come to terms with the finality of death.
