Who is Miranda from Dragonwyck and what is their importance?

Miranda is an excited eighteen-year-old when the novel begins.... off to serve at Dragonwyck, a huge estate owned by relatives. Not long after her arrival, the mistress of the house dies, and Miranda soon becomes the next lady of the manor. Over the course of the novel, Miranda will learn that everything is not what it seems.
