Who is Wu Huadong from Dragon Bones: A Novel and what is their importance?

Wu Huadong was employed as a day worker and drowned in a whirlpool. Initial rumors, claimed that Lily paid Wu an enormous amount of money to have Wu jump into the whirlpool in order to try and locate the Nine Tripods of Yu. In the end, however, it is discovered that Wu's jump was really a suicide.
