Escape serves as both escape and metaphor in the book. A person can escape from difficult situations in a number of ways. For R.J. Decker, escape is a theme in his life on several different occasions. First, Decker is a photographer and a good one. Decker spends his days taking pictures of models; however, Decker finds this boring, so he accepts a job with a newspaper. Taking pictures of crime scenes and funerals is an exciting job. Soon though, Decker begins to realize he cannot handle reality unless he is looking at it through the lens of a camera.
