Cheating is a recurring idea in the novel because it is the entire reason Decker becomes involved in the case that will propel the largest part of the novel's plot. Dennis Gault believes Dickie Lockhart is cheating at bass tournaments because Dickie always seems to win them at the last minute. Dennis claims that the last few times Dickie has won, his fish has the appearance of one that had been dead longer than could be possible in a fishing tournament. Dennis wants Decker to prove that Dickie is cheating; however, Dennis does not tell Decker that the last man he hired to prove this fact has been murdered.
