What does Elliott represent?

Elliott is a symbol of colorism and beauty standards in the novel. Jacob noticed immediately as a child that Elliott was more attractive than him and his friends because of his loose curly hair and lighter skin. Jacob felt inferior to Elliott, even though he appeared more feminine because the girls were more interested in Elliott.
