The Bible and the Christian religion provide guidance to all of the characters in the novel as to the correct ways for them to live their lives. Jacob gives his son, Isaac, a biblical name meaning “laughter” because they hope he will have a happy life. The Bible is the most important source of truth in Jacob’s life and he looks there to strengthen his understanding of women’s and men’s roles.
