Significance of Hair

Hair texture is representative of blackness and colorism within the novel. The coarseness of one’s hair denotes a closer connection to blackness, and thus, less desirability and more shame. Jacob remembers shame associated with his hair because it was not smooth and soft like the lighter-skinned boys.
