Homosexuality is representative of failure and deviance in the early parts of the novel. When Isaac reveals to his parents that he believes he might be gay, they are immediately disappointed that he is likely going to miss out on some of the experiences in life that they had hoped he could have. They see his differences as a reflection of their own parenting and mistakes.
