One of the most prevalent themes in this play is death. The play begins with the funeral of CB's dog. The dog was put to sleep after contracting rabies, killing his best friend, a little yellow bird, and snapping at CB. This leads to CB's preoccupation with the afterlife. During the funeral, CB's sister reminds him of the next life, claiming they should pray to Hecate, the Wiccan goddess of death and reincarnation, to make the dog human so they can meet him and become friends.
