The Guard is never given a proper name in the novel. As his nickname insinuates, he works as a “secret prison guard” in Jerusalem who watches over only one man: Prisoner Z (50). He got this job through his mother, a close companion of the General. Prior to this specialist job, he was a Golani soldier whose work included “demolishing terrorists’ houses in the night” (47). In the army, he worked to “better himself,” reading and working hard with the goal of getting “himself far away from Israel as soon as he could” (9). In 2014, the guard has been employed as such since 2002. He lives with his mother in her apartment, smokes joints, has tattoos, and is not romantically involved with anyone. In 2014, he shares a close connection, even a friendship, with his prisoner.
