What is Golem?

In Englander’s novel, the General symbolically refers to himself as a “golem,” conveying his lack of humanity. In Jewish legend, a golem is a magically created anthropomorphic figure created from inanimate matter. The General uses this word in particular to emphasize both his Jewishness and his savagery.
