Why would the girls care about the dance at the boys' school?

Massie and Claire both have crushes on boys who go to the school, and who are on the soccer team. The soccer coach is making all of the boys bring dates to the dance, which foreshadows that they will bring other girls, in Massie and Claire's absence. Also, the girls are shallow, and obsessed with social events.
