Is education important to Massie and Claire's parents?

Massie's parents seem to have an ambivalent attitude about their daughter's education. After she gets expelled, her mother lets her do whatever she wants, as long as she can show that it is educational, which makes it seem like Kendra is just making a show of caring about Massie's education. However, the girls' parents won't let them audition for the movie unless they all have a tutor, and get straight A's.
