Mr. Oscar represents white male oppression. When he rapes Rufel during their visit to his plantation, Dessa realizes that her previous fears were misaligned. White men do not strictly take advantage of black women; they have the power to use white women as well. Mr. Oscar resurfaces frequently in Dessa and Rufel's dialogues, as he is the reason the two feel a newfound connection. Through Mr. Oscar the women see one another as women in a shared experience, rather than those divided by race.
