Significance of Dreams

Throughout the novel, dreams represent the individual's true desires and longings. The italicized dream sections of the narrative provide the reader access to Dessa's subconscious, therefore illuminating her real character. Dreams are frequently mentioned outside these passages and often reference the characters' desires to escape, to create a new future. Thought dreams are often dismissed in literature, Dessa and her family and companions believe strongly in their power to predict the future, and illuminate the individual's veritable yearnings.
