Why does Abbey prefer the desert to other environments?

The desert is silent, passive, sparse, does not invite love or population, but contemplation. At the same time it holds a mystery, and in its inaction,seems to be waiting . Abbey feels the "golden lure" of the desert can turn a person into a "prospector for life, condemned, doomed, exalted."
