Why does Abbey persist in pursuing Moon-Eye when the heat and conditions have become quite uncomfortable for him?

It is a challenge he has embarked upon and he wants to complete it, or at least to find the horse. He would not want to waste the effort he has expended for nothing. It is hard to say whether Abbey has adventures so he can write about them, or whether he simply writes about his adventures.
