Why does Abbey decide not to kill the rattlesnake under his doorstep?

After giving it some thought, he remembers that the area is supposed to be a sanctuary for all forms of wildlife and it is his duty to protect all living things. It is not that he doesn't possess a natural instinct to kill and survive, but his higher mind and his true motivations make him want to keep everything safe here.
