He feels that where there is no joy, there is no courage, which implies an animal would better survive if it had the courage to run from or avoid predators. "I suspect that the morose and fearful are doomed to quick extinction," says Abbey. He implies that the chirping of the frogs and toads is a sound of cheer, but then admits that it may even be luring their predators. Again, he is attributing human traits to animals in his daydreams.
