Desert Solitaire

Abbey seems to jump back and forth in time in his book. Where in this chapter does that first become obvious?

Abbey is discussing the wind in the desert, and says, "...you learn, after a number of years, to love them also." He obviously continued to go back to this place many times after his first arrival there, which has been the subject of the previous two chapters. Reading the preface helps us understand the time jumps in the story.
