Abbey does not speak highly of the man-made lakes on the Colorado. Why?

He feels they are stagnant , useless attempts to generate cash from electricity. They will not serve any purpose for irrigation or drinking water, but only provide a recreational facility. The building of the dams and lakes on the river has interfered with the river's natural flow and beauty, and now attracts the dirty residue of tourists.
