Who is American Writers from Democracy in America and what is their importance?

According to the author of "Democracy in America," back in the early 19th century, the United States had been unable to produce an important or valuable body of literature on its own. The only kind of literature America produced is of the journalistic type, mainly because this is what the majority is requesting. Americans read either to stay informed, for leisure or for entertainment purposes.
